1) Situation at July 2006

lse library shib progress at july 06

Figures are percentages for each access type against the total (see Table below) protected e-resources at LSE Library. Not all types are mutually exclusive, and there is a two- or three-way overlap for some resources.

'Shibbolised' means the resource was directly Shibbolised by the service provider (publisher, distributor or aggregator) and available from the UK Access Management Federation.

'Gateway' means that the resource was listed on Eduserv's list of Athens Gateway Compliant resources, whether or not it had been tested at the LSE Library.

'EZproxy' means that the resource could be accessed using the EZproxy system employed for some resources at the LSE Library.

'Non-Gateway, etc.' means either that the resource was listed on Eduserv's list of resources that were Not Gateway Compliant (but still accessible via 'classic Athens' - known as OpenAthens post July 2008), or that it was not known to be accessible using Shibboleth, Athens Gateway or EZproxy, and required some other type of access control.

Table of Available Access Types for E-Resources Used at LSE Library in 2006

Access Type Actuals (not mutually exclusive) Percentage against actual total of Library's e-resources Adjusting total to 100% Actual total of library e-resources

2) Situation at September 2008

LSE Library e-resources at Sept 08

Figures are percentages for each access type against the total (see Table below) protected e-resources at LSE Library. Not all types are mutually exclusive, and there is a two- or three-way overlap for some resources. Also, some large databases contain smaller databases or data sets within them, making the total number difficult to calculate.

'Shibboleth' means that the resource can be accessed via Shibboleth and is available from the UK Access Management Federation.

'EZproxy' means that the resource can be accessed using the Shibboleth implementation of the EZproxy system employed for some resources at the LSE Library. This means that as far as users are concerned, they are accessing the majority of Library e-resources using the same access method - their institutional username & password .

'Other' means that the resource is not currently accessible using Shibboleth, or EZproxy, and requires some other type of access control, e.g. an individual username and password.

LSE Library e-resource status at Sept 08
Access type Access total of LSE e-resources (not mutually exclusive) Percentage
Shibboleth 17 9.6
Shibbolised EZProxy 151 84.8
Other 10 5.6
Total 178 100
