Business benefits for LSE

What are the business benefits to the LSE of using federated access management technologies, such as Shibboleth?

  • Reduced overheads in password support: Shibboleth should facilitate moving closer to the 'single sign-on' ideal. With Shibboleth, users only have to remember one username / password (their institutional login) to access a number of internal and external resources and services.
  • No difference in on-campus and off-campus access: Shibboleth operates in the same way whether the end user is remote from the campus or not.
  • Powerful and flexible access control: By using user attributes for access control, it is easy to limit access to a particular group of users, such as students on a particular course. Shibboleth can be used in a number of different situations, from managing access to internal and external restricted resources to resource sharing, providing potential for inter-institutional sharing of resources.
