Work plan (activities and timetable)
The project will be implemented as six distinct main tasks:
Project management and reporting (PM)
Shibboleth & uPortal development (SUPD)
Shibboleth authority manager development (SAMD)
End-user evaluation & liaison (EEL)
Technical evaluation & liaison (TEL)
Internal and external dissemination (DD)
Project management and reporting (PM)
The project follows the structure and direction outlined in the PERSEUS Project Plan submitted to the JISC. Day-to-day project management is recorded and monitored in ProjectPlace, a professional project management application. In addition, the project is using a DSpace repository for storing both public and private project documentation. Progress is monitored through scheduled formal reports to JISC, as well as monthly informal reports to the Associate Partners (e.g. the systems vendors), the LSE Library Senior Managers Group, other Core Middleware projects, and staff at LSE with an interest in the project.
See PM deliverables
Shibboleth & uPortal development (SUPD)
This task is concerned with the implementation and maintenance of operational and test/demonstrator online services, including Shibboleth Origin(s), Target(s) and other experimental access management architecture components. In particular, it deals with the development, integration and testing of uPortal modifications to meet end-user requirements and link with campus access management and content management architecture.
See SUPD deliverables
Shibboleth authority manager development (SAMD)
This task is concerned with the development (in collaboration with Internet2 Shibboleth Team) of the selected authority manager as an integrated component of Shibboleth architecture.
See SAMD deliverables
End-user evaluation & liaison (EEL)
End-user evaluation and liaison are important components of any portal development. The PERSEUS project will conduct formative user assessment of content requirements and content access conditions. Ongoing liaison with the LSE Library and VLE admin staff to identify cost-savings via limited access content licences will also be necessary. This strand of the project will also provide Helpdesk (2nd line) end-user support for the pilot version portal trials, as well as training of 1st-line end-user support staff. There will also be summative evaluation of the portal trials with end-users.
See EEL deliverables
Technical evaluation & liaison (TEL)
Technical evaluation & liaison for PERSEUS is about managing the interaction between the PERSEUS project and related initiatives, including Shibboleth, Signet, PERMIS and uPortal. It will also involve maintaining links with the development teams on these projects to ensure that PERSEUS development fits into their planning. Technical evaluation of software status and suitability for UK HE usage will be undertaken.
See TEL deliverables
Internal and external dissemination (DD)
- Internal production of institutional architecture and implementation guides.
- Dissemination and publicity activities to promote external uptake of guides and other project results.
- Internal publicity to end-users to inform about and promote use of portal facilities.
- General dissemination to promote awareness and knowledge of the project.
