Abstract:

This document provides guidelines and practices critical to developing, managing, and delivering digital resources online. It will act as a source of information for projects and services involved in the development of the Distributed National Electronic Resource for learning, teaching and research. It will also provide a point of reference and information for the variety of stakeholders interested in the development of the DNER and for those interested in sharing or contributing content to it. Adherence to standards plays an essential role in improving access to the information resources accessible online. Without the implementation of agreed approaches throughout the DNER, the aspiration of timely and usable networked information for use in education will not be realised.

Commentary:

This workbook is an essential background read for details concerning the DNER. It covers the goals and architecture of the DNER, Preservation and Records Management, Content Creation, Network Services for Interoperability, Middleware, and Presentation.

This workbook is also a good general introduction to interoperability issues within the UK education sector.
